As we age, we aren’t exactly paranoid or even conscious of the effects that growing older will have on our skin, until you realize that…A few brown spots on your face are slowly becoming more pronounced. Your skin feels thinner, looser, drier and more sensitive. Fine lines have crept in around your mouth and, no matter how hard you wish them away, those darn crow’s feet persist. The ta-da at the end of this mystery? Your skin is showing the signs of aging.
Age & Individuality
First of all, relax! Aging is a natural part of life. It does, unfortunately, begin to leave it’s mark on your skin as you (surprise surprise) age. Actually, your skin can start aging as early as 21, but before you freak out about that little fact, understand that everyone’s body is different – some look much older than they are, while others’ appearances remain shockingly young throughout their lives. Caring for Our Skin as We Age
While we can’t prevent the aging process altogether (yet!), we can drastically slow it down by staying on top of self-care. One example is regularly cleansing and moisturizing your skin with pH-balanced products to help reduce signs of aging over time – the earlier you start the better. Here are some other crucial do’s, and equally important don’ts.
- Give your skin a bit more love with additional nutrients, protective agents, lipids and moisturizers. These nutrients go a long way to make up for the fact that you’re starting to produce them slower on your own.
- Apply high-quality skincare products regularly (everyday if you can), especially on skin sites that are exposed to environmental stress.
- Choose products that work best for your skin type.
- Choose creams and lotions with pH 5.5 (like Sebamed Q10 Anti-Aging products) to maintain the optimal level of acidity on your skin.
- Support skin circulation with regular exercise (walking for 30 minutes, 3 days per week is shown to make a huge difference!) and massages. Consistently applying creams and lotions is a great opportunity to circulate your skin with gentle massaging, too.
- Protect your skin from becoming dry or irritated after sunbathing by moisturizing after every time.
- Drink at least 2 liters of water, herbal tea or fruit juice daily. Staying hydrated is vital to healthy skin.
- Eat food that is rich in minerals, vitamins and essential oils.
- Get at least 7 hours of sleep every night.
- Avoid stressing your skin out with cleansers that are too neutral or aggressive. Use mild, soap-free cleansing products with pH 5.5 for sensitive skin (e.g. Sebamed Liquid Face and Body Wash for normal skin, Sebamed Anti-Dry Wash Emulsion for dry skin) whenever you wash, shower or bathe.
- Avoid and/or protect yourself from environmental factors that speed up skin aging, especially pollution, cigarette smoke and too much sun.
